Their first album, Northern Soul, provided other singles, including a full release of "Colour My Life", "Someday" and "Excited", followed by a re-release and repackaging of the album.ġ993 started with the re-released and remixed single from 1991's "How Can I Love You More?" which was released at the end of January and provided the band with their firstTop 10 single, peaking at number 8. Their first release came in the form of "Colour My Life", a limited white label pressing which got them some recognition, but it was the first official single "How Can I Love You More?" that gave them their first Top 30 hit and a following in and around the Manchester club scene, where Pickering was still DJ-ing. She had been in the English Soul band Hot House, which had released a number of critically acclaimed records without scoring any major success. The original plan had been to have a roster of different singers for different songs but having been spotted by Pickering and Heard, Heather Small became the distinctive vocalist of the group. Paul Heard was a member ofacid jazz band, Ace of Clubs and Shovell had previously been in the collective Natural Life. Their percussionist Shovell later found fame as a member of M People.Pickering had been a member of Factory Records dance act Quando Quango, but became more noted as one of the original DJs at The Haçienda. The band performed on Channel 4's The Word on 28 February 1992. Although the band enjoyed a large UK following and were regulars on the festival circuit playing at both the Glastonbury and Reading festivals that year, they never managed to break into the mainstream.

The second single "Natural Life" received the same accolade two weeks running. The band's first single "Strange World" was voted 'record of the week' by BBC Radio 1. They toured extensively with indie dance act The Farm and provided support for Seal on hisUK tour. The band were signed to an offshoot of Hollywood Records called Tr1be Records. This almost exclusively Mancunian mini-festival was a memorial festival for the recently deceased Martin Hannett run by Factory Records.(see Cities in the Park video band list) They were the only London based band to play 'Factory Day' at 'Cities in the Park' with The Happy Mondays, Electronic and A Certain Ratio. Their early gigs listed venues such as Danny Rampling's fledgling 'Milk Bar' and 'Eat The Worm' at the Hannover Grand, where they were supported by the then unknown Ocean Colour Scene. They emerged from London's Balearic dance movement and were quickly caught up in a bidding war between the major record labels. Natural Life were an English band of the early 1990s that are best described as a 'bohemian rock collective', their music being a combination of rock influences and dancefloorbeats.
